LONG TREK SEES MAROONS FINE CUP WIN ST CUTHBERT WANDERERS 0 KEITH 2

Half-time: 0 - 1

Scorers - Donaldson(17), Walker(78).

It was still dark at 6.00am on Saturday morning when the Keith FC bus left Kynoch Park heading off on it's 500 + miles round trip to the shores of the Solway Firth, Kirkcudbright to be exact, where they were due to tackle South of Scotland League outfit St Cuthbert Wanderers for the first time ever reports Charlie Simpson.

Well, the long trek was certainly worthwhile as the Maroons left St Marys Park later that day with their name safely in the hat for the second round draw of the Scottish Cup, thanks to two super goals from Dean Donaldson and Stuart Walker. It was as though the script had been specially written for this match, Donaldson's net bulger came the same weekend as his testimonial dinner, Walker's clincher came in his first game for six months due to injury, and the clean sheet came on the back of two defeats that had seen Darren Still's side concede nine goals.

The manager recalled Andy Shearer to wear the goalie's jersey, Walker for his first appearance since March, Craig Phillips was brought in, and Darren McAllister made a rare start in the first eleven.

The main aim early on was not to concede a silly goal, and the visiting defence looked far more assured than of late. Three corners were conceded in the opening four minutes as the home side tried to impress themselves on their visitors, but it was Keith who really should have drawn first blood in the 10th minute. Dean Donaldson was sent sprawling inside the penalty area by Roddy Cooksely, but his weak spot kick was easily saved by the diving Shaun Hutchison.

Four minutes later Craig Rudd brought a fine diving save out of Andy Shearer, but within three minutes the sun drenched spectators were treated to a real gem of an opening goal for the Maroons. Dean DONALDSON gathered the ball deep inside the home half, looked and blasted and unstoppable 20 yarder into the top corner, well beyond the helpless goalie for his 4th goal of the season, and his 96th goal for the Club, that ton is just round the corner Deano!

That stung St Cutberts into a quick response and Justin Nicholl rattled the crossbar with a 25 yard free kick. Then, when the bounce of the ball beat Craig Phillips in the middle of the park Colin Carnochan pounced, but Shearer dived to hold his 15 yarder. This was proving to be real end to end cup-tie and on the half hour mark Lennox raced onto a through ball only to screw his shot wide of the far post, a real chance lost.

A minute before the break, Lennox and Andy McAskill combined but the latter's shot was saved by the diving 'keeper. At the other end, almost on the stroke of half-time the homesters struck the bar again when Graeme Prentice let fly from the edge of the box.

The Maroons dug in after the break as the home side pushed forward in search of a leveller, but they failed to breach the solid rearguard. The visitors were hemmed in for a five minute spell, with a string of corners being conceded, but then with 12 minutes remaining the home gas was put at a low peep when a second goal killed them off. A McAskill corner flew into the danger area amongst a melee of bodies, and WALKER clinched a dream return by slamming a 15 yarder into the net, to cap a fine display by him.

That was that really, as the Maroons kept a cool head to see out the game.

A thoroughly professional team performance, but Walker was the outstanding player afield, whilst Donaldson was a constant threat, and Lennox ploughed a thankless lone furrow up front until he was replaced late on.

MAROONS CRASH IN DEMOLITION DERBY HUNTLY 4 KEITH 1

Half-time: 3 - 1

Scorers - Huntly -Somers(7, 9, 36, 51).

Keith - McAskill(2).

Keith revisited the scene of their disappointing Aberdeenshire Cup Final defeat, Christie Park last Saturday and were put the sword by ex-Maroons midfielder Barrie Somers who grabbed a superb quartet of goals to send the Maroons crashing to defeat reports Charlie Simpson.

Darren Still's men started with a bang scoring within two minutes, but then with a defence like a massive sieve, they proceeded to let Huntly completely overwhelm them, and it was hardly ideal preparation for the forthcoming Scottish Cup trip to St Cuthbert Wanderers. To make matters worse Jamie Lennox was also sent from the field of play after receiving two yellow cards,a nd coach Kenny McKenzie was sent to the stand.

Keith were without injured captain Derek Nicol, and talismanic goal snatcher Cammy Keith who is away on holiday.

A frantic opening spell saw the Maroons romp into a second minute lead when Dean Donaldson whipped over a right wing cross and Andy MCASKILL sent a bullet header into the back of the net from six yards. Five minutes later it was all square thanks to a suicidal Neil Robertson pass across the park right into the path of SOMERS, and the ex-Keith player clinically shot wide of the diving Murray Kinnaird from 15 yards.

Within two minutes Huntly were in the lead and again it was comedy defending as Paul McCarthy swung in a left wing cross and SOMERS had plenty of time to rise and easily nod down into the corner of the net. What a sizzling start to the game, and at this stage the Maroons were still in with a shout. Hastie dived to clutch Donaldson's near post shot, and then Lennox hit the face of the crossbar with a fine header.

Midway through the half, McAskill pulled a fine diving save out of Hastie with Donaldson thundering the loose ball over the bar from 12 yards. Unfortunately, more defensive dithering in the 36th minute saw SOMERS grab his hat-trick when he stroked home a low 12 yarder off a Neil Reid left wing cross. Sean Keith ought to have done better three minutes from the break but he blazed over with a right wing shot when he might have been better served cutting the ball inside to a team-mate.

If Keith fans were hoping for a brighter start to the second half, they were left thoroughly despondent when their side fell further behind within six minutes. Russell Guild teed the ball into the path of that man SOMERS, and the unstoppable midfielder curled a a shot from out on the left wing right into the far top corner of the net. This was a one man demolition and no mistake!

Matters got worse for Keith with 73 minutes on the clock when Lennox, who was earlier booked for diving inside the penalty area, received a second yellow card for a high challenge on Neale Davidson on the halfway line. Kenny McKenzie was also sent to the stand for his comments to the referee following the incident.

The Maroons were a gey lethargic looking side after that and indeed had Kinnaird not pulled off a fine block save on David Booth, Huntly would have had a nap hand.

It rained most of the second half, making it a thoroughly dreich day all round for Keith and their fans, with the downpour of goals conceded in the last two outings, nine, rather worrying prior to the important Scottish Cup first round trip.
